NR evolution – realizing the full potential of 5G

The initial 5G systems are being currently deployed. Even though the focus of these initial deployments has been on mobile broadband and fixed wireless use cases, the overall ambition with 5G systems is significantly higher: to shape industries and even the whole society. To reach this ambition, further evolution of 5G systems is needed.

In this speech, we describe the evolution of 5G NR in 3GPP. In Rel-16, the capabilities of NR will be extended to introduce support for e.g. self-backhauling with Integrated Access Backhaul (IAB), operation in unlicensed spectrum (NR-U), vechicle-to-vechile communication. Examples of potential further enhancements to NR in later releases include operation in higher frequencies and enhancements to better support machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Wireless Access Evolution

With the completion of the first release (Rel-15) of the 3GPP fifth-generation (5G) NR specifications [1], the research community should now direct its focus towards the next step in the evolution of wireless mobile communication. Similar to earlier generations, it can be expected that the next ten years will see a gradual evolution of NR, introducing new innovative technology components and further enhancing the capabilities and expanding the scope of 5G wireless access. In a longer-time perspective, we may see the emergence of completely new “beyond 5G” radio-access technology.
