Linus Thrybom is manager of the Industrial IoT research team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden, as well he is coordinating the connectivity research within ABB. His research interests include industrial communication and 5G, system architecture, distributed real-time systems and Internet of Things. He received the M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1991. From 1992 to 1997 he was with the ABB Industrial Systems, Västerås, Sweden, as design engineer of embedded systems. From 1998 to 2008, he was with the Bombardier Transportation, Västerås, Sweden, as project leader on train communication and control systems. Since 2008 he is with the ABB Corporate Research, Västerås, Sweden, where he in 2011 became Principal Scientist, and in 2015 he became manager of the Industrial Communication team.

It takes dedication to adopt 5G
As the 5G technology is being implemented, we now fast approach the time for verticals to start implement solutions as well operation plans. New constellations of verticals, telco operators and telco vendors, as well new ways of working, are necessary to reach successful implementations for the many new user domains that are foreseen.
New solutions, markets and users don’t come for free, a number of risks are already identified, but several of them will be mitigated by dedicated spectrum for vertical usage. This talk will explain why dedicated spectrum will ease the adoption of 5G, and enable a fast and successful 5G rollout in the industrial automation domain.
