After 11 years as Communication engineer in industry and with the European Space Agency, Bernard Barani joined the European Commission in 1994 as responsible for research and policy issues in wireless communication. He is currently Deputy head of unit in the CONNECT Directorate General.
His field of activities covers the implementation of the 5G Public Private Partnership launched in 2013, to support 5G European R&D, standardization, international cooperation, demonstration programmes. He is also involved in the implementation of the 5G Action Plan supporting early 5G deployment in Europe, and vice chairman of the Steering committee of the EUCNC conference. He is currently coordinating the setting up of a successor to the current 5G PPP under the next Horizon Europe programme of the Commission (2021-2027). He has an engineering degree from the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne”.
6G for Europe: Drivers and Motivations
Whilst 5G deployment are only starting world-wide, several nations have already started initiatives, mainly at R&D level, to define what could come “beyond 5G” or as a 6G system.
The European Commission has also launched 6G preparatory work, in view of preparing for what comes after the 5G Public Private Partnership launched in 2013. This new work should be implemented under the Horizon Europe Programme of the next Financing Framework (2021-2027) and support the digital ambition of the new Commission. The presentation will outline the new political priorities of the Commission and how 6G relates to those. It will notably outline the currently identified 6G objectives from a societal, economic, industrial and technological point of view as currently under discussion between the European Commission and the European stakeholders with the objective of launching a 6G Europeaninitiative in 2021.
